What Does the Seven-Day Route Look Like?
Exact overnight stops vary, but a standard Osh-to-Dushanbe itinerary normally follows this logic.
Day 1: Osh to Sary-Mogol or Tulpar-Kul
The journey begins by crossing the Taldyk Pass into the Alay Valley. Many routes spend the first night near Sary-Mogol or at a yurt camp around Tulpar-Kul, approximately 3,500 metres above sea level.
This is not just a scenic opening. It is also the first acclimatisation step before crossing into the higher Eastern Pamirs.

Day 2: Kyzyl-Art, Karakul and Murghab
The route crosses the Kyzyl-Art Pass at roughly 4,280 metres and enters Tajikistan. After border formalities, the road continues past Karakul Lake toward Murghab.
This can be the most abrupt altitude day when travelling from Osh. The landscape becomes drier and settlements are increasingly far apart.
Day 3: Murghab, Ak-Baital and the Eastern Pamirs
Depending on the programme, the day may include Ak-Baital Pass at about 4,655 metres, Alichur, Bulunkul or Yashilkul. Some routes take short side trips rather than following only the main M41.
Distances on a map can look modest. Rough surfaces and frequent stops mean the day may still involve six or seven hours around the vehicle.
Day 4: Into the Wakhan Valley
The route descends from the high plateau and turns into the Wakhan corridor. Common stops include Yamchun Fortress, Bibi Fatima hot springs and villages looking across the Panj River toward Afghanistan.
This is usually one of the most varied days, but it is also easy to overload. A tour promising every fortress, hot spring, village and hike in one day may provide only brief stops.
Day 5: Langar or Ishkashim to Khorog
The road continues west through populated sections of the Wakhan and toward Khorog. Accommodation becomes somewhat more comfortable, and mobile data is more likely to work.
Afghan cross-border markets should not be treated as a guaranteed attraction. Current programmes report that the markets are closed to foreign tourists even when local trade continues.
Day 6: Khorog to Kalaikhum
This is another substantial driving day along the Panj River. The road can be narrow, dusty and slow, with delays caused by maintenance, traffic, rockfall or changing conditions.
Day 7: Kalaikhum to Dushanbe
The final journey is roughly 350 kilometres and may take seven hours or more. Some programmes stop at Hulbuk or viewpoints near Nurek before reaching Dushanbe.
Do not plan an international flight for the same evening. The arrival time depends on the road, border-region checks and the group’s pace.
What Do Nine Days Actually Add?
A useful nine-day itinerary does not simply divide the same drives into smaller pieces. It adds places that are difficult to fit into one week.
Jizeu Valley
Jizeu is reached by a walk into a side valley in the Bartang region. It provides a genuine night away from the main road and a different type of homestay experience.
A Longer Mountain Hike
Some nine-day programmes include a five- to six-hour hike toward Mahan Peak, reaching approximately 4,400 metres and overlooking the Bulunkul and Yashilkul area.
This turns part of the journey into an active mountain trip rather than a road tour with occasional short walks.
More Useful Time in the Wakhan
Extra time reduces the need to combine a long drive, multiple historical stops, a hot spring and an evening arrival on the same day.

Starting in Osh
Osh lies at roughly 900 metres. The first night may already be at 3,500 metres, followed by passes above 4,000 metres. This direction reaches the highest region quickly.
Spend at least one night in Osh before departure. A few days in the Alay region are even better for acclimatisation.
Starting in Dushanbe
Dushanbe begins near 700 metres, followed by Kalaikhum and Khorog before the route climbs into the Eastern Pamirs. The altitude increase is more gradual.
This direction may be physically easier, but it may not fit a wider trip beginning in Kyrgyzstan.

Tajikistan Entry Rules
Visa requirements depend on nationality and length of stay. Some travellers can enter Tajikistan without a visa, while others require an e-visa or advance application.
Do not rely on another traveller’s passport experience unless they have the same nationality and travel dates.
GBAO Permit
The Pamir route passes through the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Foreign visitors require separate permission even when their nationality qualifies for visa-free entry to Tajikistan.
The official permit fee is approximately $20. Tour companies may charge around $30–35 when processing or registration assistance is included.
Carry printed copies of the permit and keep the original available for checkpoints.
Kyzyl-Art Border Crossing
Kyzyl-Art is the high road crossing used by the classic Osh–Murghab route. The wider Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border reopened in March 2025, and organised departures are currently crossing this route.
That does not make documentation permanent or automatic. Ask the organiser to confirm in writing:
- that Kyzyl-Art is open for your travel date;
- which permits are required for your nationality;
- who prepares and carries the documents;
- whether the same vehicle crosses the border;
- what alternative is offered if access changes.
How Much Time Is Spent in the Vehicle?
This is primarily a road trip. Even the nine-day route includes several days with five to seven hours of driving.
Common long sections include:
- Sary-Mogol to Murghab;
- the Eastern Pamirs into the Wakhan;
- Khorog to Kalaikhum;
- Kalaikhum to Dushanbe.
The road alternates between pavement, broken asphalt, gravel and narrow mountain sections. A daily distance of 200 kilometres can still consume most of the daylight.
Ask whether every passenger receives a window seat. With four travellers this is not possible in every vehicle configuration, and rotating seats is fairer on a long journey.
What Is the Accommodation Like?
Most nights use yurts, homestays and basic guesthouses rather than conventional hotels.
Expect some combination of:
- rooms shared by up to four people;
- outside toilets;
- shared showers;
- limited hot water;
- power cuts;
- weak or absent mobile signal;
- simple meals served by the host family.
Accommodation in Khorog is normally more comfortable. Karakul, Murghab and remote Wakhan villages are much more basic.

Official travel advice for some countries currently recommends reconsidering travel to GBAO and areas near the Afghan border. Advice differs by nationality, so check the guidance issued by your own government rather than copying a general statement from a tour page.
Insurance should explicitly cover:
- Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan;
- travel above 4,000 metres;
- planned hiking activities;
- medical evacuation from a remote region;
- trip interruption after border or road changes.

The route is one-way and the final drive is long. A spare night protects an international flight, onward border crossing or train connection from delays on the highway.
Best Time for the Pamir Highway
The most reliable season is generally from June to early September. July and August provide the warmest high-altitude conditions and the widest choice of shared departures.
Some operators run trips from May into October. These shoulder months can be quieter, but nights are colder and snow or ice is more likely on high passes.
Even in midsummer, pack for freezing temperatures, strong wind and sudden weather changes above 4,000 metres.
