Planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan is mostly about three things: choosing the right season, allowing enough time for the roads, and deciding which remote places are worth the extra transport.

Karakol and the eastern mountains: Karakol is the practical base for Altyn Arashan and many of the best-known mountain routes near the eastern end of Issyk-Kul.
Issyk-Kul: Use the Issyk-Kul guide to compare ways of exploring the lake. The guide to Cholpon-Ata is more useful if you are considering the developed north shore.
Song-Kul: The lake requires more planning than Issyk-Kul. There is no simple direct public transport connection, so begin with the guide from Bishkek to Song-Kul.

Travel between the main towns is manageable by marshrutka or shared taxi. Reaching trailheads, valleys and yurt camps is where routes become less predictable.
Check transport before booking remote accommodation. A cheap guesthouse is not much use if reaching it requires an unexpected private transfer.
A driver, guide or organized trip is not necessary everywhere. It becomes useful when public transport ends far from the destination, several remote stops need to be combined, or the route involves horses and overnight stays.

For a first visit, Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Karakol and one mountain or yurt-camp trip make a workable outline. Adding more places can mean spending much of the trip retracing roads.
